But not everyone knows what an IPX rating is or why it is so important. Today we’re going to explain what an IPX rating is and why it’s important.
What is an IPX Rating?
IPX stands for International Protection or Ingress Protection. And IPS rating is an international code that describes the level of protection, provided by the casing or enclosure of the device. This protection is against dust, water and in some cases, the ingress of other particles or fluids.
Each rating starts with the IPX abbreviation followed by a number value, such as IPX2. IPX is the general beginning for products that are waterproof/water resistant/splash proof for devices being used outdoors or in wet rooms, like bathrooms and laundries.
Why Do We Have an IP Rating System?
In order for buyers and users to be confident in the safety of their products, we have the universal IP rating. This allows you to be sure you can use specific goods and devices in different environments. An IP rating gives a far more specific account of how water or dust proof a device is, rather than using vague terms like “waterproof”.
The Meaning of Martec IPX Ratings
The IPX, IP or water resistant rating is one of the most important things you should check when buying a device that will be set up outside or in a wet room like a bathroom or laundry. Below are some of the IP ratings held by Martec products.
Martec IPX Ratings
IPX2
A device labelled with an IPX2 has a level 3 water resistance rating. It can survive drops of water falling on it while being tilted at a 15. This amount corresponds to 15° angle. The devise is tested 4 times, in4 positions and the amount of water resistance corresponds to 3mm per min rainfall.

IPX4
IPX4 – a device labelled with an IPX4 rating has a level 4 water resistance rating. It can survive splashes of water from any direction. It can also survive sprays of water, sprayed by a nozzle with a counterbalanced shield.

Martec IP Ratings
IP44
An IP44 rating means the device has protection against solid objects large than 1mm, such as fine tools, wires, screws, nails, larger insects, and other small, potentially invasive objects. It also has protection against splashing water from any direction, tested for a minimum of 10 minutes with an oscillating spray. A limited ingress is permitted with no harmful effects.

Limited ingress is permitted with no harmful effects.
